Sun Reflecting off the waters of the Ranjit Singh Dam...: My adventurous self finally took over this March and I headed to the hills. Dalhousie beckoned me with its tantalising name and fame. During my three days two nights stay in Dalhousie, I stole a day to visit Khajjiar and Chamba. I am so glad that I did. Khajjiar is unbelievable. Who would have imagined this expansive pastureland surrounded by Deodars right in the middle of a Very Hilly Terrain.
When I reached there, blissfully, there wasn't much crowd. Usually, the entire ground is full of people. In this paricular Picture, the absence of human activity helps in emphasizing the magnificient Deodars.A close up of Deodars. Look at the two men on the left to get an idea of the sizes of these giant trees.A Colorful bridge leading up to the middle of the lake.Hills reflected in the water of the lake. Me on the Bridge. My guide obliged me with by clicking this picture.A horse grazing peacefully. I don't think I have ever got so close to one except at weddings.Another Horse. This one was rather skinny though considering the amount of fresh grass it has access to.Cloud rising out of the hills reflected in the lake. There were several beautiful buildings around the ground. Many of these were restaurants.Me next to a broken bridge. Sun Reflecting off the waters of the Ranjit Singh Dam...: The town of Chamba is located at a distance of 56 kms from Dalhousie. Unlike Dalhousie, Chamba is located in a valley surrounded by majestic mountains and lies on the banks of the river Ravi. The town is also famous for the fact that a part of the Bollywood movie, Taal, was shot here. The market area in the town is not well-maintained and desparately cries out for a cleaning up. The colorful sloping roofs contrast well with the brown of the mountains and the deep blues of the sky. There is a vast green area right in front of the town. This is the garden that features in most of the Himachal pradesh Tourism Pictures of Chamba. When I visited Chamba, the green area was not open for public. Work was in progress for installing light posts and what looked like the entire population of the town was simply standing there and watching the labourers at work. These are the simple pleasures that you lose out on while living a super fast city life. All around the green area, there is a paved path. The place is ideal for an evening walk. I had Golgappas there. Not good as the ones we get in Delhi. These were the lights that were being installed in the green area. There were a few benches there leading me to believe that the garden does open up for the public some time. The Entrance. Among other attractions of Chamba is this Raja Bhuri Singh Museum which show cases several paintings, sculptures and weapons. The museum was established in 1908.Chamba, Himachal Pradesh, himalayas, Taal, Valley, Town, Museum, Raja Bhuri Singh

Sun Reflecting off the waters of the Ranjit Singh Dam...: Beautiful Trek towards snow covered peaks of Dainkund from Dalhousie (Casual Clicks without editing) : Posted by VJ Sharma at www.travellingcamera.com : Due to busy schedule these days I am not able to find time to explore places.. Its been two months I am only doing my work :-) So here are few old photographs of a Trek to Dainkund form Dalhousie....Its you have seen my last post about Kala Top Trek, there is a station on main road called Lakkar Mandi from where we change the route towards Kala Top... For Dainkund also, we take right cut from Lakkar Mandi...Dainkund gets maximum snowfall in Dalhousie region...There is a road till the top of this hill, but we chose to trek this distance with some drinks and snacks ... (I don't want to be specific here...)This whole stretch is full of natural richness... Deodars all around and clouds moving here and there to save from hash sunlight on the hills...A view of Khajjiar Lake from Dainkund... Wind on these high hills is chilly and fast.. I completely different experience... We spent some time sitting on these hills and when we moved in calm places(dense deodar forests, there was a continuous beep sound in our ears....We didn't follow this road because it becomes time expensive and a bit boring.... We used to take short-cuts through various forests on the way... Had chance to play with snow balls also :-)Whole stretch is clean, green and full of colorful flowers... I was not very fond of photography during this time and that is the main reason I am not able to portray real image of this place... It was difficult for me to find photographs without people faces :-)Some criss-cross roads on the way... There are few villages around this trek having beautiful mud houses and bunch of sheep spread over various hills...Initially I was not comformtable with the idea of posting this photograph on my blog.. I searched in google and found that many sites already has this information available... I am not sure if its right or wrong but somehow I feel guilty about the act of taking this photograph :-(I know these photographs are not appreciating the real beauty of the place but believe me it was very exciting trek for us... and I these pictures are not giving real view of the place... This place was probably 10 times beautiful than you see here..There is a series of mountains on the trek and finally we reached a temple on the top... Temple was covered with snow, so we were not able to have darshan there...Some random shots in deodar forests....Darkness inside these forests in clear sunny day...Colorful forests make this trek wonderful... A view to Dalhouise on back journey.. Everyone is waiting to have rest for next day Trip to Chamba....
If there is no snow in Dalhouise, go to Dainkund... You will find something to play with :-) .... A nice trek through forests and high mountains...

Sun Reflecting off the waters of the Ranjit Singh Dam...: On the way from Chamba to Dalhousie, my taxi-wallah stopped at a peaceful location where one could easily access the rocky banks of the river Ravi that flows along the town of Chamba. The blue waters of the river present a striking contrast againsts the brown rocks and mountains. The wide spectrum of various colors enriches this untouched rustic landscape. The river snakes through the rocks and pebbles and the mountains. It has carved its way through them across the centuries.A couple of local village boys were having a liqour party. They chose the highest of the rocks on the bank. The distant bridge and the rounded rocks make this location worth painting. The ripples in the water paint beautiful light patterns on the rocks below. As the water levels were low during this season, numerous small pools had formed on the banks. The river bed was slippery because of age old algae. These pools were the ideal play ponds for little birds. we wish to visit Dalhousie in October end. We have shortage of time. Can we visit Khajiar and Chamba from Dalhousie and back to Dalhousie in same day!! Please suggest. Will four nights be ok!! Regards.

VJ Sharma said...

Hey Goutam, Ohh yes, you can go to Khajjiar and Chamba on same day and come back to Dalhousie. 4 nights at Dalhousie and more than enough. Khajjiar is just 23 kilometers from Dalhousie. So one day can be spent around Chmba and another day around Khajjair, Kapa Top & Dainkund.

During one of my trips, I have also done Khajjiar and Chamba on same day. Hired a cab, went to Chamba via Khajjiar and came back to Dalhousie via Chamera dam.

Thanks a lot. I am relieved. I was tense with schedule. I am reducing the days to 3 as per your suggestion. regards.

Hi VJ I have read so many blogs and all are awesome. Photographs are mindblowing. Thanks for sharing great info. :)
I am from Mumbai. Planning to visit Himachal Pradesh from 18 December for 11 days ( Mumbai- Amritsar- Dalhousie and it's surrounding places)
I am planning to visit ( Dalshousie - khajjiar - Chamba ) ( Dalshousie - Dharamshala - Mcleodganj - Palampur - Baijnath, Masroor Temples, Pong Dam & wet lands) or directly go to (Kullu - tosh - spiti)
But i am little confuse about weather. Can you tell me which places i can visit in DECEMBER..?

thanks & Regards,
SUBDOH PANCHAL

VJ Sharma said...

Subodh - You have enough time. It will be chilled especially in areas you mentioned You may also find snow during last week of Decemeber. If it's not snowing or raining, day light would be brilliant to explore himachal. But be prepared for the chill during mornings and evenings.

subodh said...

Thanks a lot VJ..

I have read your blog on Rashmi villa..? is that nice..?

or as you mentioned in the same blog " Just on the left hand side, there are multiple layers of hills. These hills were having snow where we visited Dalhouise. More than snow, I really liked these beautiful houses having similar architecture and aligned symmetrically on this mountain."
As i am believe in backpacking, Can we stay on those houses..?
If not then can you suggest me some nice and descent hotels with reasonable pricing in Dalhousie, McLeodganj..?

thanks in advance

I am reaching Pathakot on 14th evening and will take Dhauladhar Express on 19th Nov night 11PM) I am travelling with my Specially Abled daughter (35+)who is not very fond of climbing. I am staying for 3 days in YOL & 1 day in Dalhousie, which I can shorten by 1 day. Grateful if you could suggest places, covered by shared taxi/taxi. I intend taking shared taxi fm Pathakot (are these available & if so fm where) to road head nearest to YOL. Little climbing is OK because it would be good try for my daughter

VJ Sharma said...

Mukesh - You can take a bus from Pathankot bus stand or hire a taxi from Railway station. Taxi would cost you around 1700 Rs. I have seen people sahring taxis as well. E.g.- if there are 5 folks, it would cost around 400 per person.

Hie..I have a trip planned for dalhousie from 26th to 28th December.. will that be a good time to visit dalhousie? A lot of warm clothes needed?
Actually we are coming from Mumbai n haven't visited any very very cold places so just needed some details regarding the aprox temperature n all if anyone could help..
Thanks..

VJ Sharma said...

A LOT of warm cloths for sure :)

hmm Approx temp, difficult to guess but you have expect somewhere between 2-8 degree. During day, it should be good if there is enough sunlight. Weather in dec varies lot and depends upon the snowfall. During fresh snowfall, it's bearable but just after the fall temperature goes down.

Be ready with warmest possible cloths, a pair of good gloves & socks would be helpful. Keep caps to cover your head and ears, especially if you haven't been to hills in winters.

Wish you best !

Can we visit dalhousie in month of Feb after 20, plz suggest

VJ Sharma said...

Rajeev, It's difficult to predict. If there is heavy snowfall, then roads may get blocked. But usually roads are cleared soon. Only challenge is that you may have to visit Khajjiar via Chamba. Most of the times, Dalhousie Khajjiar road is blocked in winters.

You can if Dalhousie-Khajjiar road is not blocked. This road is usually blocked due to snowfall. Even if road is blocked you can go to Khajjiar via Chamba, which is defiitely longer. It may get hectic to do it in a day but not impossible if you have your own vehicle/taxi and you start early in morning.

14th Reach Jammu. Shopping and Night Stay at Jammu.

15th and 16th Jammu to Katra. Mata Vaishno Devi Darshan and back to Jammu

17th Jammu = Chinchi Mata = Madabpur River = Dalhousie (Night Stay) 190 KM

18th Dalhousie = Khajjar = Dharmshala (Night Stay) 150 KM

19th Dharmashala = Chamunda = Baijnath = Kangra = Jwala Devi (Night Stay) 150 KM

20th Jawala Devi = Chintpurni = Amritsar (Night Stay) 200 KM

21st night return journey from Amritsar

Please suggest if my plan looks fine and I can cover all places in that time frame?

Thanks
Rahul

VJ Sharma said...

Hey Rahul,

Thanks for writing !

Here are my inputs on your plan after 17th (Dalhousie). Your overall plan looks very aggressive. I doubt you would be able to enjoy these places. Most of the times you would be on road. If you do simple math in terms of travel time, breakfast, lunch, dinner, there is hardly time to experience the places you mentioned.

I am sure you don't want to miss Mcledoganj. I would suggest to skip Baijnath, as it's on other side. So go from Dharmshala to Kangra and then Jwalaji. From your itirinary it seems you want to visit temples, so I am not suggesting the alternates.

Wish you best and do share about your trip when you are back. Learnings are always helpful.

Hi Kishor, Your plan is absolutely bang on. Two days are sufficient for Dalhousie, Khajjiar and Chamba. And yes i would recommend the same hotel to you too. Reason is obvious, its too good. Moreover, bring warm clothes, cuz the weather will still be cold during may. Have a good journey.

VJ Sharma said...

D Singh - It's good time. You can try for 1500/1600 but don't pay more than 1800 Rs. Try to check with your hotel, any other guest i coming on same dates. Usually Hotels can help in arranging common pickup, which is usually cost effective.

Sir please suggest me whether taking package of honeymoon at hotel mount view is a good idea or not? Or I should better visit at Dalhousie and then make stay bookings? I have plan for 14th to 17 th September for my birthday and also please tell me what type of cloths should we pack? Is Dalhousie one of the place to explore summer cloths in September? Please reply ASAP.

VJ Sharma said...

Hi - Your comment is little confusing and have very little details to suggest you soemthing. Weather should be pleasant these days. I don't think woolens would be required, but keep one jacket each if it rains. During rains, it gets cold.

As far as hotel booking is concerned, Sept is not a tourist season so getting hotel shouldn't be a problem. Since it's hilly you may get tired in finding right hotel just after reaching Dalhousie. Not sure who all are accompanying you. I would recommend to do advanced booking and negotiate well.
