It's one of the must visit places in Bhubaneshwar, especially when kids are accompanying you. It's very different from Zoo  you see in cities by Delhi. It's a zoo and botanical park. Some part of it is also declared as sanctuary.We took a guide along and he was very good. It was fun to learn from him about various birds hiding behind the leaves, their characteristics and tricks to locate some of the beautiful birds. We loved the fact that birds had huge space to fly around and their cages were not small. There are huge areas covered with iron nets and these compounds have good vegetation.  Monsoons made our visit more adventurous :) and thanks to our guide for arranging umbrellas on rent. Colors were popping up due to rains. We loved the fact that everyone had enough space inside the zoo to walk and enjoy monsoons.Nandankanan zoo is home to about 1600+ individual animals representing 160+ species, including 60+ species of mammals, around 80 species of birds and approximately 20 species of reptiles.
