Fifth Day of MTB Himachal 2010 - Highest peaks of Jalori Pass welcomed us with Snowfall - 27th October 2010: Posted by VJ SHARMA on www.travellingcamera.com : Hope you have been enjoying the PHOTO JOURNEY of MTB Himachal 2010 and it's fifth day now ... Everyone has left Kullu Sarahan Camp and first stretch has started .... ON fifth day we had to reach Baahu for camping... We crossed Baghipul, Urtu, Nithar, Bandal, Kutal, Kalog, Durah, Nithar, Jalori and finally reached Bahu... Check out these photographs from fifth day of Bike Riding....Mr. Ankit Sood and Sumit Sond, two PHOTOQUEST participants .... Both of them were very energetic and on fifth day of MTB Himachal, they decided to have Buggy ride... I had a good company with Ankit, Sumit, Surbhit and Jimsee... Real Artists !!! Riders moving towards Jalori Pass which had recently got snowfall... everyone excited to hit the place with snow and have some fun in white...Real Engineers of India who make our lives comfortable... Here is a Photograph of daily-wage worker on th side of a road under harsh sun.. He is breaking big stones into appropriate sized pieces for repairing the adjacent road...During fifth day, we were traveling on very high and narrow roads ... Here is one of the view we had from the edge of a road ... A Photograph of Satluj River crossing various hurdles of Himalayas...Finally whole Group of MTB Himachal riders reached Jalori Pass... here is the beginning of the mountains with snow... Most of the mountains at Jalori Pass had recently got snowfall and Bangar hills were just behind these hills....I also wanted to have one photograph with these riders in front of Bangaar Hills but unfortunately snow covered Bangaar Hills are not clear in this Photograph...This is the point where we had to start the uphill Stretch and we are standing here to make sure that every rider take the hidden cut rather than going straight towards Aanni... Most of the Photographers were asked to stop at tis point because the road ahead was narrow and we didn't want to block the road for riders....Since we were waiting at this point, I though to trying some panning shots here and here is one of the panning shot of rider flying towards Baahu...This journey was wonderful journey through scenic roads with naturally rich hills in Himalayan Ranges of Himachal .. Really MTB Himachal 2010 provided a great opportunity to explore unexplored Himalayan beauty...Here is a photograph of a Himachali Village which came on the way to Baahu...Seeing waterfalls, snow covered hills, beautiful houses was a common thing during this journey of MTB Himalayas ... Its evening time now and time to take rest at Baahu Camp....

Here are some photographs of early morning when Mountain Terrain Bikers started their journey towards next destination.... Check out these Photographs of 5th day of MTB Himachal 2010...Bikes are ready and having sunbath in the chilling weather of Kullu Sarahan.... Everyone is busy in getting ready for fifth day riding and today everyone was excited about Jalori Pass .... Jalori Pass had recently got snowfall and we were about to hit the place to feel the white freshness of th0se hills...Riders started the free ride till the next village... Fist Stretch was downhill and it was very rough route of 10 kilometers till Baghipul.... Many of the riders encountered various technical problems in their bikes that day....Another rider walking out of the camping site.... Every morning we used to give all our stuff to MTb Marshals an they ensure that luggage reaches the next camp on time... Safety was not a concern for them :) ... So Bikers and others should pack the stuff in such a way that rough handling of luggage has no impact of your stuff... I used to carry my Laptop Bag with me and it was easy for us because we were in cars...Here is another temple near Sarahan Governement School...Riders started the free ride till the next village... Wonderful day outing @ Color Factory in DLF Mall, Saket, Delhi

Recently our team got an opportunity to try their hands at painting at a team outing. It wasn't an easy task but all of them came up with masterpieces of their own by the end of it.

It wasn't an easy task but all of them came up with masterpieces of their own by the end of it.This was a sample of the mask that we were supposed to come up with. The tools that we were supposed to use.The cups that contained the brushes were apparently created by painters very much like us.There were several painted cups and the paintings were like modern art. I am not sure that this was the intention of the painters though.People at various stages of their artistic journeys - Nandan already hard at work, Ankit picking up the brush, Priyanka waiting for an inspiration. :-)Inspiration struck!! Why's Ankit's face so blue? Some people looked very much at ease with the task at hand though. I don't know what Nandan is scratching off his face here...At last some face-colored faces!!!Natural progression from Ankit's blue face to Anurag's purple one...Beautiful...Some are born with natural talents of making people go green...A rude face sticking its tongue out... Nice shades of Blacks...Its amazing how many different expressions you can convey with exactly the same face structures...Courtesy the colour factory...Now its time to have lunch and Big Chill !!!

This was a sample of the mask that we were supposed to come up with... Initially we had to select any shape which we want to color and everyone had different choices but no decision after 15 minutes.. Finally we decided to take these masks for all and color them....

The tools that we were supposed to use... Initially we thought that process of coloring these masks would be very easy, but it was not the case... Whenever we were coloring these masks, it used to soak the colors quickly and if we try color that area again, it was either mixing with the existing color and removing the old one... Not as easy as painting on paper or fabrics with oil colors....

I know I am late to post these photographs but idea is to share the colorful view of Delhi during Christmas season... Last week, we went to Select City Mall in Saket for a day outing and saw lot of arrangements for Christmas celebrations on 25th ... It was the news that Select City Mall in Saket was going to host best evening in the city... I am not sure about the authenticity of this news but surely the mall was ready for wonderful celebrations... Check out these Photographs !!!Most of the markets in Delhi were full of Christmas goodies and decorations... Most of the markets get these goodies and decorative stuff from China or local factories in outer Delhi areas... Some of the markets like Khan Market gets these things for Europe or Australia... Saket Malls were very well decorated with all these things...In Select City Walk Mall of Saket, there was a huge Christmas tree which was made of crystals and was surrounded by shining spheres of various colors... A reflection of mall can be seen inside the leftmost sphere...This year Santa was animated at many places and was made of some special stuff... Every year, we see a new trend of all these things and in 2010, many event management companies had less resources as compared to deals they had... Now all these celebration days have become a good reason for get together and parties... Most of the Malls in NCR organized various programs during 25th December, 2010...Here is the outermost gallery of DLF Mall in Saket and it came to my mind that the money spent on all these decorations could have been better utilized for people who are sleeping on Footpaths of Delhi during these winters... But next to this decoration, mall has organized some cultural events to raise funds for an NGO who takes care of Cancer patients in various parts of INDIA... Merry Christmas Day to everyone !!!Here is a view of huge Christmas Tree inside Select City Walk Mall in Saket... It was made of of crystals only...Whole Mall (Select City walk) was decorated with various things to make everyone feel about the Christmas season in the city... Santa, Red houses with snowfall, Green trees with sparkling ornaments and what not...Just wanted to share a photographs of the mall where most of the Photographs were shot .... Select City Walk Mall in Saket, DelhiHere is another Christmas Tree outside DLF Mall in Saket... Unique styled Christmas tree....

All of us spent a wonderful day in Kullu Sarahan village... During fourth day we also went for a trek and here are few photographs of our stay at Kullu Sarahan Village on fourth day ... Check out !!!There was a colorful temple in the middle of Sarahan Village.... Due to some reasons it was closed and we were not able to see it inside...Kullu Sarahan village has a beautiful landscape and a government HPPWD rest house. During july/august/september, many folks reach the village for trekking and some of these trekkers stay at the rest house near a huge ground in the village... Its like a valley on top of hills... There is a popular trek from Kullu Sarahan to Bashleo Pass which passes through dense jungles, various waterfalls and green meadoThere was a small open area outside the temple where fair happens every year and many gods from neighboring villages come here to meet each other... Their is a tradition of gods in upper Himachal where most of the villages have their own Gods and even these gods have relationship with each other... There are some defined occasions when they meet each other....Bashleo Pass is a near is a mountain pass located at an altitude of 3300 meters. It connects Kullu Sarahan to Bathad. Bashleo pass opens in April till November. In winters, the route is closed due to heavy snowfall in this region. However locals people might trek during clear days in winters as well but trekking for amateur trekkers is not advisable during these months. The pass is located at a distance of approximately 6 kilometers from Bathad and 5 kilometers from Kullu Sarahan village...ws...Here is a photograph of local container used for bringing crops to home.... They tie it on backs and keep cutting crops... When its full, crops are brought to home.... I had asked one lady about the name of this particular thing but forgot now.... This is created by Bamboo sticks and their are some experts in Himachal who can create anything out of Bamboo (Doomna Community)...Most of the houses in Sarahan Village are made up of wood and stones... Sharp sunlight hitting one side of the house and most of them were facing a deep valley in front of snow capped hills of Bashleo Pass ...Sweet children in th village... some of them were following us to know what these guys are doing inside the village... Few of them were teasing one of the photographers with fireworks... It was Diwali time and they were spending most of the time near shops having lots of crackers...Shining Electricity Towers in Sarahan Village @ Kullu, Himachal PradeshSarahan Village is rich in terms of resources... One complete day well spent at Kullu Sarahan - 4th day of MTB Himachal 2010

During MTB Himachal 2010, there was only one rest day for riders and they had chosen most amazing place for having rest... although no one wanted to rest inside the camp.. Most of the riders thought of exploring the natural beauty of the places around Sarahan Villlage... Here are some of the photographs showing the whole fun we had during the fourth day of MTB Himachal....

Most of the riders thought of exploring the natural beauty of the places around Sarahan Villlage... Here are some of the photographs showing the whole fun we had during the fourth day of MTB Himachal....A view of Sarahan Village in the middle of snow covered mountains... The village has a huge ground near Government school...Three shining trees on the other end of the village... There are few shops around these trees and people have some guest houses for visitor.. Its a beautiful village, but there is no decent hotel or guest house... But there is a HPPWD guest house on the top of a hills on the side of the ground you see in first photograph...Some houses around the main ground in Sarahan village...There were some water streams flowing around this ground and they had chilled water.... melted snow from the surrounding peaks...School Children enjoying their studies in the open... Imagine how much exciting it would be to have a class in a huge green ground surrounded by snow covered peaks... and water streams flowing on both sides of your class area....There was a small dairy in the village and the milk is delivered to the nearest town and it was most difficult task to deliver it on time everyday... No transport and one has to go 12 kilometers down to reach the place and come back....Another photograph of Open School in Sarahan Village of Kullu Distrcit in Himachal Pradesh... Masti ki pathshala...Its evening now and time is to go back to our camps for bonfire, snacks and booze....A typical roof of a Himachali House... This roof is made up of slates created from a very hard/shining stone... First a wooden framework is created and these slates are installed on top of that... Its very important to have slanting roof in these areas...And of-course, this break gave us an opportunity to make new friends... Inside the camp and outside of it...One another shot I wanted to share here :)

Christmas Carolling @ Newcastle, UK

The St. Nicholas Cathedral in the city of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne hosted Christmas Carolling in Candlelight on the evening of 21st December. Me and a few other friends went there for the experience and it was amazingly serene. It was quiet and focussed and the carolling was beautiful. We were handed a pamphlet when we entered on which the entire schedule along with the actual words of carols and prayers were printed. We just had to follow the schedule.

As soon as I say 'Christmas Carol' people assume that I am talking about Jingle Bells. But there are so many more carols, such as "On a Starry Night", "Christmas Calypso", and "Love Shone Down".

The cathedral was packed and we were sitting in the last row. This is our friend Abhishek trying to give a weird look. The hall was mostly lit by candle light along with a few cleverly hidden electric bulbs.

After the Carolling finished, we took permission from Father to click a few pictures from the front. The people you see in this picture are members of a Salvation Army band who played some beautiful tunes during the Carolling.

Note the huge crucifix on the top. This was the most beautiful one that I have ever seen.

The huge organ that was amplifying the sound in the church. The music was beautiful as was the singing. I could not see the choir though.

Beautiful Candles and wreaths used for decorations. The environment was beautiful and festive because of these.

The Crucifix and the members of Salvation Army along with the candles and wreaths. The environment had to be seen to be believed.

When I was in India, I used to put up a huge Christmas tree and decorate it for my nephew. This time unfortunately I am away from home. But there is a Christmas Party planned on Christmas Eve. Looking forward to it...

Here are few photographs of the trekking experience at Kullu Sarahan...So these mountains were our target for the day and we started early morning. Let me share me that I quit the troop on the way and many of them reached there... So the journey started from the camp after having breakfast...There was a huge ground behind our camp site and we had to cross this to start climbing towards the real himalayas with snow....After crossing this ground we saw lot of fields of charas crop in the hills.... Locally its called as 'bhang' and after few minutes we realized that the whole ground is surrounded by such crops... Colorful leaves which produce the real hash which is consumed in various parts of the country...As we started climbing, we encountered these colorful crops called

Check out these photographs to know how the day was spent in a valley surrounded by snow capped mountains. Here is a view of our camp in the playground of government school at Kullu Sarahan... In the morning everyone of us was amazed by seeing the beauty around this place. During last night, no one was able to guess all this except the mountains with shining snow on the top. An early morning view with full moon sitting on top of snow covered hills.... These hills were just behind our tents and it was wonderful...Snow covered hills were not the only beauty of this place... There was a huge ground in the bottom of these hills and it was huggge... Khajjiar in Chamba region of himachal was coming in my mind while I saw it... What a wonderful schooling experience... Class in open area while taking sunbath in the huge ground in the bottom of snow capped mountains of Shrikhand ranges... Here some of the children having their class in Sarahan valley...Who wanted to miss this opportunity.. One of the MTB rider inspired by the school children and started cleaning his bike in the ground behind the school... I don't think I can explain this experience in words..Buggy standing in front of the mountains with partial sunlight... Its an early morning scene when rising sun was not visible but its effect made us realize that the process has started... This was the only day I saw some enthu among folks in the camp... Some of them were singing, few of them dancing and many of them were screaming... but full on masti !!!

Last Stretch of Third Day to reach the most beautiful camping site called Kullu Sarahan - MTB Himachal 2010

During the evening of third day, we were close to most exciting camping site of MTB Himachal 2010.. Kullu Srahan... A lovely place surrounded by snow covered hills.. It was a nice valley at 3200 meters... Clear view to star trails, blue/bright sky, waterfalls etc... Check the photographs of last stretch which was really tough for riders and most of us reached very late in the camp...

Beautiful Journey till Baghipul on third day of MTB Himachal 2010

On third day, we had lunch at a very beautiful place which was situated on a very high mountain on the way to nirmand... We had a 30 minutes break for lunch and moved for next milestone... Some part of this road was really scary and beautiful as well.. Just have a look at some of the photographs clicked post lunch and this journey completely at baghipul.. but that was not the last destination.. everyone had to ride the bikes for 12 kilometers.. It was free ride but it took a lot of time because of the rough road till Kullu Sarahan...

It was free ride but it took a lot of time because of the rough road till Kullu Sarahan...All such seens were very scary but as I have mentioned many times that we learnt over the time that riders are much more efficient & alert as we used to think... They had full control in spite of amazing speed on these roads... Be it a downhill or an uphill, they were simply amazing... Many times it was frustrating for photographers because our van was not able to catch up with their speed...Shadows are telling about the time and now its less than 1/4th of the stretch but most time consuming, especially Baghipul to Sarahan Village... I hope you noticed snow covered hills in the background :)A new road, just created by Patel Contructions Ltd.. There was a huge project going on near the Satluj River... Lovely views from this place and we couldn't afford to have a break and shot the beauty there.. All these photographs have been clicked from a moving van....Beautiful landscapes but no time to shoot them :( .... Whole group had to be very fast because we needed more time during the last stretch where we had to climb a hill with the slope of 70 degree and it was 12 kilometers from the base site to the main camping area in Sarahan... This place are parallel to Shrikhand Mahadev...Even the peaks with snow cover are a part of Shrikhand mountain range ... One of the popular trek in Himachal Pradesh... Actually it was a pilgrimage site but now a days many trekkers go their to experience amazing beauty of the nature...Roads... 8 days on roads but all were different and more exciting for riders... They always got a new challenge during each day of MTB Himachal 2010...A view of Satluj River from the road which connects Shimla with Nirmand Village or base site for Shrikhand Mahadev(jaon village)...Here is another side of Satluj.. Both the photographs have been clicked from same place... This one is the left side and above one is of right side... wonderful view of Satluj in the middle of very high hills of Himalayas...Another Photograph of Satluj river flowing through Himalayan ranges.. Photograph click during MTB Himachal 2010...Main profession in Himachal - Agriculture and the fields are shining like anything...

Third Day of MTB Himachal 2010 - Riders reaching river-side(Satluj) after a long stretch

On third day of MTB Himachal 2010, weather was good with clear/bright sky, good sunlight and we started our journey from Tanni Jubber to Kullu Sarahan.... Journey started from Tanni Jubber lake and we took a very narrow road to hit the highway which connects Shimla with Rampur... The whole stretch was beautiful and was surrounded with very high hills covered with snow... Whole  stretech was very risky because of some sharp turns and deep valleys... Here are few photographs after we hit the main highway...

This particular bridge was over Satluj river near the main highway which connects Shimla with Kinnaur & Kaza...Here is another bridge on the way and we stopped here to click some photographs near Satluj river... Here Jimsee is looking for right place and right subject to shoot... This Bridge was not in use and we stepped down to the river bank to click some portraits..All the roads we followed were unimaginably rough and I think it was intentional to make it more adventurous for riders :)Lot many waterfalls on the way... This particular waterfall was clicked with full zoom(200mm) and original photograph was further cropped :)A board of

Check out some of the photographs of this downhill stretch across snow covered hills...First I wanted to give you a feel of the road where we were waiting to catch fast riders of MTB Himachal 2010... Road was situated on a very high hill in parallel to these mountains covered with snow... wonderful place with nice weather and beautiful surroundings...Here comes a group of riders and Cameras are not set to estimate their speed and adjust accordingly... It took time to adjust our cameras to shoot exactly what we wanted to shoot... At least I tried various things with first few riders and was able to identify right place with right settings....They were moving like anything.... Amazing actions, styles n movements...Even folks on the road were moving downwards toward the deep valley to save themselves fom these fast moving riders :) btw he is another Photographer struggling to set himself for shooting this rider...Rider number 41 ... Most of the riders knew each other by their rider numbers and it was difficult to remember the names of everyone but was very easy to know each other by rider nunber because they were sepnding most of the time on the roads crossing each other...Another rider on full speed in the middle of beautiful himalayan mountains in the state of Himachal Pradesh.... Thanks to MTB Himachal 2010...Mr. Ranjan Mandyal playing in air during MTB Himachal 2010... I got a chance to meet some great folks who have passion about bke riding and do lot of other good things in their lives... Ranjan was one of the guy I met and got a chance to understand him better... Hope to meet all of them again :)Here is another MTb rider in style... moving towards the final goal which is near Satluj river near main highway..Amcha rider from Maharshtra Police... a nice photographer as well... He was planning to host an exhibition in Kolkata and also invited us... Hope to see him next year again...Somehow I wanted to share all these photographs in black and white but it would have been unfair to the colorful beauty of surrounding himlayan mountains....Loved this journey and the colors of himalayas...
