Hotel Sunbird @Bharatpur || A Great Place to Return to After a Tiring Walk through Keoladeo National Park

One of the very important aspects of a trip is the place you are staying at. Irrespective of whether you are staying at a 5-star hotel or at a cozy homestay, if you have a comfortable room to go back to at the end of each tiring day, it makes your stay and vacation even more memorable. A good and comfortable room is like having a happy home - it never stands out enough to overshadow the other exciting adventures of a trip and yet it gives you the luxury to enjoy these adventures without stress. Hotel Sunbird was one such place.

When I was planning this trip to Bharatpur, I had read several blogs about the place. Some of these were by seasoned birders who not only visit the Keoladeo National Park often, but also lead groups of birding enthusiasts through the park. This was one of articles that I read: A COMPLETE GUIDE TO BHARATPUR BIRD SANCTUARY – WHY, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, HOW. This blog too recommends Hotel Sunbird, in the luxury section. :) Though we usually opt for regular budget options, I noticed that this particular hotel wasn't too expensive. And it looked pretty.

I booked a Deluxe Room with breakfast included for a reasonable price. However, when we reached the hotel, we realized that we had been accommodated in a cottage. These cottages were pretty on the outside as well as the inside and were simply, yet beautifully done up. The heavy, ornate door and the thatched roof gave it a rural hut-like look. And the insides were spacious, yet cozy. This was indeed a nice surprise.

The lawns are tiny and there is a banana grove in front of the cottages, which attracts tiny sunbirds and sparrows. We had a nice time clicking these birds in the morning before breakfast. The reception too is a thatched circular hut and therefore does not hurt the eye in a way a concrete structure would have done in these surroundings. In fact, it adds to the feel. Overall, Hotel Sunbird manages to blur the boundary between the bird sanctuary and the hotel by the nature right to your doorstep.

When it comes to food, the hotel is a bit expensive. Buffet dinner for one person was Rs. 550. However, there are other eating options available close by and you can easily walk up to them and have some really nice parathas or poori bhaaji etc. We had our breakfast on the first day (second day breakfast was included with the deal) at Hotel Om Sai. The parathas were very tasty. Opt for Gobhi or Aalu paratha instead of Mooli Paratha because they are tastier. Chai here was okay. The service is slow, so make sure you order everything you need at once else you will end up losing valuable time that you could otherwise have spent exploring the bird sanctuary.

We had our dinner at Chacha Chicken Chacha Franky and it was just okay, though the prices were reasonable. You can perhaps give this place a miss and explore other options for dinner.

Breakfast at Hotel Sunbird was good but parathas at Hotel Om Sai were much better. In fact, you can even choose to take a deal that does not include breakfast. You will probably want to head out to the bird sanctuary early and if you do that, you cannot hope to be back in time for breakfast. Breakfast is served from 7:30am to 9:30am and the bird sanctuary opens at 6:30.

One of the best things about Hotel Sunbird was its proximity to the entrance of the bird sanctuary. It is about 350 metres from the entrance gate and if, like us, you are looking forward to spending a day on foot, there can be nothing better than this.

Overall, we give Hotel Sunbird a big thumbs-up in terms of accommodation, location, and ambience. For food, it would be better to look at other avenues, not so much because of the quality, but because of value for money. Also because there are many other restaurants at close proximity. If you liked this post and found it helpful, I would request you to follow these things when traveling - 1. Manage your waste well and don’t litter Use dustbins. 2. Tell us if you went to a place and found it hard to locate a dustbin. 3. Avoid bottle waters in hills. Usually you get clean water in hills and water bottles create lot of mess in our ecosystem. 4. Say big no to plastic and avoid those unhealthy snacks packed in plastic bags. Rather buy fruits. 5. Don't play loud blaring music in forests of jungle camps. You are a guest in that ecosystem and disturbing the locals (humans and animals) is not polite
