In the Spotlight - Chandrima Sarkar, An inspiring Food Blogger & Photo story-teller

In our popular series "In the Spotlight" , we bring you another inspiring interview with Chandrima Sarkar, who is one of the accomplished Food Writer, Recipe Developer and a brilliant photographer. Without saying much, let's hear about her in her own words...

About you: Tell us about the place, where you were born; your education, and profession.

Born and brought up in the suburb of Kolkata in a Bengali family, I studied Bengali literature and was about to do my masters from Calcutta University but I just took an impromptu decision not to continue with higher studies on the day of university admission. Later, during early 2000, I studied computer graphics and started my career as a Graphic Designer. The keen interest of Fine Art pushed me to pursue my career as a Visual Designer. Since my high-school days, I wanted to be a painter and did a Diploma in Fine Arts too. But the twists & turns didn’t end there, these days I’m full-time into Food Blogging and my instincts from visual art & design made me a diversified creator with food-photography, food styling and content creation for my blog and for different brands that I work with.

Your Photography experience: Tell us since when you've been taking pictures. When did you start taking photography seriously in your food blogging?

I’m a self-taught photographer. I started taking food photographs from 2012, initially, I was using a Point & Shoot camera, and it was 2014 when I started shooting with my DSLR. Gradually I involved myself in food photography.
What is the key area of your photography? What have been your biggest achievements so far? What camera/lenses do you use?

Of course Food, I love clicking everything around food. The ingredients, process and the final plated version. My Blog got IFBA Best Recipe Blog award recently and I was chosen as one of the top 10 Indian Food Influencers 2018.
I use is Canon 600D in combination with EF 50 mm f/1.4 USM and EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens.
What is so special about your city/country and its life/culture? Has photography changed your vision about food?

The Indian food of different regions is something really fascinating to explore. In India, food is an integral part of society and its culture, and that is the exquisiteness of Indian cuisine.

Every single food has a story and with my experience, I always try to discover and communicate the story through my photographs and blog posts.

What are your sources of inspirations? Do you have some favourite photographers/Bloggers? How do you keep yourself motivated?

I found my love of Visual art in the form of Food-photography and Food-styling which consistently encouraging me to pursue my dreams. Besides, fellow blogger/photographer friends’ spontaneous activity around everything artistic inspires me every day.

There are numerous, whose work I admire, but my favourite is Linda Lomelino, her dream-like food photography is something unparalleled.

Constant feedback and appreciation from my readers and friends keep me motivated and of course, doing something creative is utmost important to me, so, I keep myself always on track for that.

What piece of advice do you wish to give to aspiring/budding photographers/bloggers, fans, and readers of the post?

Develop your own style by practicing photography every day. Take inspiration from the work of other photographers but don’t copy them. Always remember originality has the power to stand out from the crowd. Stay true to yourself and the work you do.
