Submarine Museum (INS Kursura) - Must visit place in Vishakhapattanam (Vizag, India)

After visiting USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum in San Diego, I recently visited another museum which is build inside a discarded Submarine although Midway was not a submarine and there is a huge difference between the sizes. But after visiting Submarine Museum in Vizag, I went back to the time when I was exploring various levels of Midway museum and watching how officers used to spend their life in the middle of the ocean for many months. This post takes you through one of the very special place to visit & explore in Vizag city of Andhra Pradesh state of India.

As of today this submarine is placed on Ramkrishan Mishan beach of Vizag and is being used as a museum. There is an entry ticket and you also need to buy ticket for your camera unless you don't want to click any photograph inside the museum.

Kusura was in use till 2001 and was also used during India-Pakistan 1971 conflict. Apart from that Kusura has travelled to various other countries for collaborative efforts. This submarine is still talked about a lot in Indian Navy, even when it's out of service for many years now.

Staff in the museum is very passionate and disciplined. I loved it as these guys have strict guidelines to explore the museum and they ensure that everybody listens to them & follow the recommendations.

Above photograph shows one of the control chambers and these statues are placed inside these rooms to give a feeling of how teams and individuals used to play their roles on the submarine. Each detail in dresses is taken care well. Photographs don't do justice to this place and the experience can be replicated in photos or even videos.

Above photograph shows the part of the submarine where ill individuals used to be put for treatment. It's sort of mini hospital inside the Submarine.

Let's also talk about how to reach to the Submarine museum in Vizag and what else can be done around this place. This road is very well connected through taxis, busess and the autos. The museum is exactly on the beach, so after exploring the museum you can walk around and have some fun during early morning or the late evening. During the day, sun can be very harsh and hence it may not be very pleasant, although it depends upon the time of the year.

When you visit Kusura Submarine museum in Vizag, you see 2 queue - one is for Hindi speaking people and another for local language consumers. One group goes inside at one time because the guide tells about the submarine in one language at any point of time - Hindi or the local language. I loved the way staff of this museum run the whole show in such a brilliant way. Visitors create more chaos but these guys handle that well.

It's a amazing experience when you are standing in the middle of all this mish-mash of a submarine and imagine how people would have spent time in this for many weeks or months when they are on mission. Beautifully crafted and amazingly empowered machines. I would love to see more of these which are in use by Indian Navy, although I don't know how.

We loved exploring the museum although it was very quick as they don't allow you to spend lot of time inside due to queuing outside the main entry gate. After that we drove to the Dolphin's nose to see the lighthouse and the other places around.
