Why people bring bed-sheets, carpets or newspapers to railway-stations in India

Why people bring bed-sheets, carpets, newspapers or to railway-stations in India If you have ever travelled in trains in India, I am sure that you must have seen people sitting on the floor of platform or areas around the waiting room. Usually folks bring something to put on the floor and sit. At times, you may find groups even sleeping on floors. There could be various reasons, but recently we also felt the need of carrying a bed sheet with us, when our train was 2 hours late. And due to fear of traffic, we left early from our house. So we had to spend around 3 hours at the railways station, with minimal seating arrangements as compared to number of people waiting for train on the platform. Since we had 3 hours of the railway stations, so we thought of exploring other reasons for carrying something to spread over the platform and have rest. Folks traveling in general section of the train are not guaranteed to have seats, so if it’s a longer journey it’s not possible to go standing throughout. In such cases newspaper, bed sheet or other similar stuff comes handy to spread over the floor and create seatings for yourself. I travelled in general few times, but I was lucky to find a seat but there are many instances when finding seat is difficult. There is another reason. When folks are in transit and next train has waiting of 4-5 hrs, many many people prefer to stay on the station instead of moving out and staying in hotels. And of-course, moving far away for hotel doesn’t make sense if you have to spend 1-2 hrs in commute. The good part is that cleanness on railway stations and trains has improved, which definitely makes things convenient for passengers. Do you know any other reason apart from the ones mentioned in this post?
