Wish-list of TravellingCamera was updated when my uncle returned from Oman after 24 years. He was a doctor there and had a lot to share when we came back to India with his family. And it was not about the stories being told by my Uncle but also by my cousins. And the most important reason to add it to my wish-list was the diversified experiences Travelling-Camera can have in Oman. This Photo Journey shares some of the things I would like to do in Oman.

Oman is known as 'Sultanate of Oman' which is popular for surprising the tourists coming to this beautiful country. It's a perfect destination whether you are looking for fun with your  family & friends or adventurous explorations.

Travelling-Camera loves architecture and Heritage and Oman has plenty of options. So first thing would be exploring palaces and forts in Oman and capturing them in my Travelling-Camera. Some of the popular options include - Khasab Fort, Grand Mosque , Al-Hoota Cave, Royal Opera , House in Muscat, Bahla Fort & Sultan’s Palace. Have heard a lot of Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, especially for largest chandeliers in the world and second largest persian carpet.

Experiencing some of the famous Souqs. Mutrah Souq and Nizwa Souq two of the popular souqs in Oman. Dotted with a number of souks, Oman is quite a shopper's paradise. For artefacts and souvenirs, Muscat's Muttrah Souk is the ideal place to head to. Equally popular is the Nizwa Souk, which comprises a labyrinth of alleyways selling an array of items—especially antiques—which make great souvenirs. Frankincense, dates, honey, miniature dhow, traditional craft and jewellery can be purchased as well.

Dhow Cruise and Desert Camping is probably the must that I should try in Oman. Do I need to say more about it?

Travelling-Camera loves to explore things at it’s own leisure and Wadis can be explored best in same way. It’s more about hiking, swimming, or having fun in valleys and river-beds. Some of the popular Wadis include - Bani Khalid, Wadi Shab and there are many more. One needs to plan the itinerary well to make best use of time in Oman.

One has to set his or her priorities when visiting Oman, because there are lot of things to do and one needs to have enough time to explore it. So it’s more about mapping the itinerary as per personal preferences.

Muscat and Musandam are main places  where spinner whales, long-nosed common dolphins and humpback dolphins can be seen doing various things in water. Such action is always a favorite activity of Travelling-Camera :) and because it’s about Dolphins, Travelling-Camera would definitely be interested. I had taken a Dolphin tour in Goa, but had no success.

The Grand Canyon of Middle East aka Jebel Shams is Oman’s highest mountains and one can enjoy hiking, trekking, biking, off-roading or various other adventure sports. By the way off-roading is tougher than it sounds, so only opt if you are fine with bumpy rides and have some exposure to such adventure before. Travelling-Camera has been part of World’s most difficult off-roading race in Himalayas and has some exposure. So we are ready for some more :)

When you have limited time and you feel that you haven’t really explored the place, it’s always a good idea to find out about the important and relevant museums around based on your interest. They expose you to a lot more information than what you would experience otherwise. At times, museums are very enlightening.

National Museum, Qurm Museum, Children's Museum, Oil and Gas Museum, Natural History Museum, Bait al Zubair and Oman Museum are some of the top in the list. Let’s how many of them can be visited by Travelling-Camera. Although there is a reason which keeps Travelling-Camera away from Museums, and it is that tiny notice ‘Photography is prohibitted’. But we understand this :)

Oman has a very rich culture, so it makes sense to do some research about different festivals and fairs of Oman, which can be witnessed during the visit.

I learned from National Geographic that Oman is a great destination if you want to witness turtles who visit Oman beaches from Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, and Somalia to lay eggs every year. Guided tours are organized for Ras al-jinn Turtle Reserve that are quite popular among tourists. Masirah Island, Ad Daymaniyat Islands and other Omani beaches are other destinations for some specific types of turtles. I need to do more research to find out the one I want to visit.

Last but not the least, cuisine of Oman is something that can't be ignored. Especially there are plenty of interesting options for folks who love non-veg. While compiling this, I am already feeling like I am in Oman. Wish to be there soon and experience most of the things I got to know about Oman in last few years.
