Experiencing stunning Pacific side of Costa Rica with Luxury of Four Seasons Resort, Papagayo Peninsula

Our final destination at Costa Rica was the Papa Gayo Peninsula and this was also where the rest of our group would be joining us. Our stay was booked at the Four Seasons Resort on the peninsula. We booked a shuttle from Monteverde to the resort. It took us about 3.5 hours to reach the resort and then the drive inside the Four Seasons gated property took another 10 minutes. The property occupies the entire hill on the peninsula and has private access to several beaches. Our room at Four Seasons was overlooking one such beach - Playa Blanca.

Let's start with our room first. This was one of the best rooms we have ever stayed in. Done up in wooden finish, the room was spacious and cozy at the same time. The bed was obviously cushy and comfortable and the bathroom was actually prettier than the rest of the room. The room also had a huge balcony with lavish seating arrangements. The balcony overlooked Playa Blanca and one could potentially spend a nice evening there. Order dinner and wine and lounge in the balcony enjoying the cool sea breeze. Except evenings too were very hot and we were so busy most of the times that we had very less time to spend in the room. Our room was perhaps one of the most basic ones in the resort. One morning, we decided to take a walk through the property and it was then we came across private cottages up in the hill, overlooking either Playa Blanca or Playa Veridor. These cottages had private infinity pools too. From outside, they looked quite beautiful. We didn't get to see the interiors, but I am sure they would have been amazing too.

The Four Seasons property itself is very well-maintained with golf courses and several pools. Along the pools, there were snacks and drinks counter where you could order your cocktails or drinks. Sunscreens were available at these counters too. If you wanted to sunbathe, you could either float in one of the pools or occupy one of the beach beds. However, the sun was too sharp for us during the day. We could only stay on the beach in the evenings. The Four Seasons Resort also offered several paid and complimentary activities to the guests. These included volcano trails, zip-lining, snorkeling and scuba diving, river-tubing, mangrove walks, sunset hikes, bird-watching, s'mores evenings etc. We opted for a catamaran tour (that included snorkeling), volcano trail, sunset hike, river-tubing, s'mores, kayaking, paddle-boarding, and rum infusing. Related Blogpost from Costa Rica - Snorkeling & Catamaran ride in Pacific Ocean, Costa Rica All of these experiences, with the exception of s'mores, was completely worth it. We did not enjoy s'mores mostly because we do not enjoy the taste of marshmallows. Rum infusing was fun and it did a great job making us drunk before a drinks and dinner party. :) River-tubing was scary and fun. In fact, that is one experience I would want to repeat and this time I would want to try to not fall into the water at the waterfall. We also managed to kayak in the Pacific ocean without drowning. We will talk about these experiences in separate posts. Related Blogpost from Costa Rica - Snorkeling & Catamaran ride in Pacific Ocean, Costa Rica

Apart from this, there were several impromptu celebrations. One of them was a hermit crab race, and another was a Tuna Sushi and Sashimi party at the beach, organised specially for our group because the chef had managed to catch a huge tuna during the day. The resort was great at making us feel special. I guess they did that for all the groups staying there, but nevertheless it made our stay extra special. While we were there, we went to three dinner parties hosted at different restaurants across the property. Each dinner was special in its own way. Food was great and the wine pairing was awesome. Food otherwise was really expensive at the resort. One basic breakfast, comprising of gayo pinto, fresh fruit, and eggs and sausages, cost us USD 75. However, taste-wise there could be no complaints.

The resort was also home to several species of birds and animals. We were able to spot trogons, zanates, egrets, iguanas, and several species of crabs without too much effort. A band of howler monkeys also lived around our room and we could hear their calls at all times during the day.

All these were great things - with the exception of expensive food. But there is one big drawback of choosing Four Seasons resort. And that is -it is so far away from the civilisation that if you need any supplies for your personal use, you have no option but to opt for their expensive on-property store that has very limited options anyways. Going into the town for shopping is not at all an option. Taxi from the resort to the town, one way, costs USD 130.

Apart from the cost and the distance (which probably was a concern for us, but would not be for people who generally choose to stay at such resorts), staying at Four Seasons Papa Gayo was a once in a lifetime experience. Four nights seemed like too short a time to spend here. The room itself was an experience in itself. And all the fun activities that the resort had to offer made the stay really rich experience-wise. If you have the money or some other means (VJ's office sponsored our stay here) to afford a stay at Four Seasons resort, we would definitely recommend you go for it. It is completely worth it.

It was an exceptional experience and it was great that we stayed at Four Seasons at the end of our trip otherwise we wouldn't had enjoyed other hotels we stayed in.
