Nikon D7200 Vs Canon 80D - Which one is better DSLR to buy & why ?

Few months back I shared my personal views about Canon 1300D Vs Nikon D3300 and this post got viral and still one of the top posts to be viewed. That's a huge encouragement to see that post is helping many to take a good decision. Recently Diwali discounts were available on all e-commerce website, and we received various queries about camera selection. Most of the queries were related to entry level cameras, but one of the other query stood out - comparison between Nikon D7200 and Canon 80D. Both of these DSLRs are in semi-pro category. Today, we are going to look into the offerings by each of these cameras and then evaluate which one makes sense for what kind of photography. We would also look into price effectiveness of both the cameras.

Should we first talk about commonalities first?
  • 24 MP
  • APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • Optical (pentaprism) viewfinder
  • 1920*1080 video resolution
  • Built-in Wireless
  • Weather Sealed Body
  • Build-in Flash
  • Face detection focus
  • Large LCD screen
  • Microphone & headphone port
  • Time-Lapse recording
  • Both of them don’t have image stablization
I am not comparing body size and other things related to thickness n all. I would rather make my decision on the basis of functional offerings. A little over-weight or under-weight is not going to decide it for me. If you are choosy about the size & weight, please do let me know through comments. Now let’s talk about different genres of photography and which one is good fit for what? Portrait Photography – Nikon D7200 has little edge here Street photography – Canon 80D should be better on this Sports – Both are at same level, but Canon has little edge because of higher fps. Daily use – Nikon D7200 can be a better option Landscapes – Both are equally good options If we talk about lenses Canon 80D support little more number of lenses, but we are talking about 250+ lens for both of them. So important point is how many lenses you are going to buy. If not too many, it’s not a big differentiator. It’s important if you already know the kind of lenses you would buy, compare their performance and then see what makes sense. Only you can decide that in better way. On Image quality lot of websites rate Nikon D7200 better as compared to Canon 80D. But when I say comparison on other sites, you would also see Canon 80D being declared as feature rich in comparison to Nikon D7200. Travellingcamera Verdict - Both the cameras offer good Photography features and it's certainly hard to pick. One way is to look at your use-cases and decide what makes sense to you. Currently on Amazon price of Canon 80D is 74K and Nikon D7200 is available at 70K. If you are looking for Sport photography, Canon 80D should be the option because of higher shooting speed. If you love low light or Night photography, Nikon D7200 is the option for you. Overall I am inclined more towards Nikon D7200 after analysing all features and current price point.

Nikon D7200 has little bigger sensor as compared to Canon 80D. (23.5*16.6 Vs 22.5*15). This difference is not huge but theoretically bigger sensor is helpful in better image quality, especially when shooting in high ISO. Nikon D7200 also supports higher ISO. Let’s quickly look at the factors which make Nikon D7200 a better choice ? -

Let’s quickly look at the factors which make Nikon D7200 a better choice ? -

  1. Max ISO is 1,02,400 as compared to 25,600 (Makes hell lot of difference if we talk about low light or night photography)
  2. Nikon D7200 has 51 focus points as compared to 45.
  3. Better battery life (Claims to shoot 1110 vs 960)
  4. Better color depth and dynamic range
  5. Nikon D7200 has 7% larger pixel area in comparison to Canon 80D
  6. Shutter Life Expectancy is 1.5 lac vs 1lac
  7. LCD screen is little bigger (Not sure if that makes any big difference, when we take buying decision)

Let’s see where does Canon 80D stands out -

Canon 80D has articulating screen, which gives flexibility in shooting positions And the screen has touch capabilities. (Personally I am little scared of touch screens on cameras. I am little old world, I guess and would rely more on buttons :) ) Offers 7 fps, while Nikon D7200 offers 6fps

If you liked this post and found it helpful, I would request you to follow these things when traveling -

- Manage your waste well and don’t litter
- Use dustbins. Tell us if you went to a place and found it hard to locate a dustbin.
- Avoid bottle waters in hills. Usually you get clean water in hills and water bottles create lot of mess in our ecosystem.
- Say big no to plastic and avoid those unhealthy snacks packed in plastic bags. Rather buy fruits.

- Don't play loud blaring music in forests of jungle camps. You are a guest in that ecosystem and disturbing the locals (humans and animals) is not polite

FINALLY WHERE I GO CANON OR NIKON ?
Anchal - why only Nikon or Canon. Consider others as well. The times has gone, when people used to think about Nikon or Canon. Please also look at Sony cameras and decide which suites you best
