Indian Museum, Kolkata, West Bengal


While in Kolkata, it makes sense to visit the largest and oldest museum in India, Indian Museum.  Indian Museum has rare collections of antiques, armour, fossils, skeletons, mummies and Mughal paintings. This post shares more about Indian Museum, which is located in Kolkata and easily accessible through Metro. 

Indian Museum was founded by the Asiatic Society of Bengal  in Kolkata (Calcutta). It was 1814 when Indian Museum took it's shape. The founder curator was Dr Nathaniel Wallich who was a Danish  botanist.

Indian Museum has six sections comprising 35 galleries of cultural and scientific artifacts namely Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology and Zoology.

Along with oldest museum in India, Indian Museum is one of oldest museums in the world. Indian Museum is under Ministry of Culture , Government of India.
