Tiger conservation - Long way to go || #WorldTigerDay2015

Tiger Tourism in India is much talked topic an there were some discussions that Tiger Tourism will be banned in India. India has maximum number of Tigers in the world and hence it attracts a lot of tourists from various parts of the world. This Photo Journey shares some facts about Tiger Tourism in India and how various wildlife stakeholders think about it. Since Tiger count was decreasing in the past, Indian court had given a judgement to stop tourism in core Tiger reserves and folks responded to this judgement very differently. Statistics show that National parks which are most frequently visited by Tourists have high count of Tigers over a period of time. And Tigers have disappeared from regions where there was hardly any tourism. Recently I met a Wildflife Conservation officer and he had the same opinion that many of the things in our country are preserved only because of Tourism - be it the Heritage like Taj Mahal, or Wildlife. Some of the popular Tiger Rserves in India are - Corbett in Uttrakhand; Ranthambore in Rajasthan; Kanha, Bandhavgarh & Panna in Madhya Pradesh, Kaziranga in Asam, Meighat in Maharashtra; Bandipur in Karnataka; Periyar in Kerala; Nagarajunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve in Anhdra Pradesh. There are approximately 40 tiger reserves in India. Tiger reserves are set up throughout India to provide a protected environment for animals still in the wild. Resorts and villages were set up for tourists, local as well as foreign, to see the tiger habitats and perhaps catch a glimpse of the big cat. The frequent visits inside the forest repel poachers and hence it proved to be a good activity to conserve wildlife. Madhya Pradesh has one of the best tourism eco system because of 6 tiger reserves in the state. Tourism is still on in all of the Wildlife National Parks across the country and encouraging for conservation of Wildlife, especially Tigers. Tiger Tourism is very important for India and hence it's conservation as well. Many of the NGOs, individuals, government authorities have joined hands towards conservation of Tigers in our country. And because of great efforts for #SaveOurTigers, we have been able to increase the count of Tigers in past fewyears. Tiger Tourism is win-win situation for everyone - For folks involved in tourism activities earn good money which boosts overall economy of our country, the conservationists are happy that count is increasing with time and there is less risk to the tigers in various core forests in the country. In National Parks like Ranthambore, lot of foreign tourist visit every year. There are various tourists who visit some of the selected national parks every year and prefer to have multiple Safaris inside the forest areas.Landscapes of different national parks are different hence every national park offers a different experience. Almost everyone of us know folks around us who have visited these Tiger reserves more than once. Hope that Tiger Tourism in India keeps growing and for positive reasons. At the same time, we hope that tourists also mature with time and respect nature & wildlife of on earth !!The Royal Bengal tiger with its golden and black coat and golden-eyes is the most graceful animal in the world. And it behaves like a celebrity too. Found in India, Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, the tiger, though endangered, is still the most numerous of all remaining tiger species of the world. And I have always felt proud of the fact that our country is the place where the Royal Bengal Tigers are found in the largest numbers.

Tiger conservation - Long way to go || #WorldTigerDay2015

The population suffered a huge setback in the last few decades because of poaching, but now because of conscious, consistent efforts of the Government and various organizations such as Sanctuary Asia and Aircel, the population is slowly on the rise.

Especially in the parks such as Ranthambore, the population is larger than the park can practically support. This has created a huge dilemma because of the increasing incidents of human-wildlife conflict. It is therefore very important to create more such zones where tigers can survive.

At the same time, it is important to maintain a healthy prey population in areas where tigers already rule. This will prevent the tiger from venturing close to human settlements. This can in fact be the key in preventing human-wildlife conflict and hence help in conservation.

While tiger populations are on a rise in the country, it is important to stay focussed and not become overconfident. we need to look at this cause holistically and take proactive measures rather than reactive ones. We need to take steps to ensure that tiger populations are able to flourish in a healthy habitat. Tigers are the pride of our nation and we need to treat it in a manner suited to its stature.
